P4P2010 a Smashing Success! 10/03/2010
Over 300 riders braved high winds and on-and-off rain to make it through six hours of bicycle relays, Zumba classes, a cornhole tournament, and other activities during Saturday's 2010 Pedal for Peace event at Major Taylor Velodrome. In the process, over (unofficially) $55,000 was raised this year to support education to help promote peace worldwide. We thank all our donors, sponsors, riders, and other friends who helped make this year's event a wonderful success! Add Comment WE ARE "GO!" FOR PEDAL FOR PEACE! 10/02/2010
Pedal for Peace is ON! If it is raining this afternoon, be prepared to walk. The children of Afghanistan are fighting for their right to go to school, so let's get out there and Pedal for Peace!!! Registration opens this afternoon at 2:45! Here's a breaking news update from Elizabeth Miller, P4P Team Captain Liaison: Pedal for Peace 2010 is taking place at the Major Taylor Velodrome on Saturday, October 2, from 4:00pm to 10:00pm. LOCATION The Major Taylor Velodrome is located at 3649 Cold Spring Road Indianapolis, IN 46222 (Click Here for a link to a map.) ARRIVAL TIME Team Captains should arrive by 2:45 pm. At that time, one car from each team can line up to be allowed to drive into the track to deliver tents and tent items, such as chairs, food, coolers and decorations. Each team will have 2 minutes to deliver items to their site and there will be volunteers to help each unload. You can walk any items to your tent at any time. SCHEDULE OF THE DAY For a sneak peak of Saturday's schedule of events, clickhere. TEAM FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS Get creative and assign team members to bring different items. The weather looks a little on the cool side, so you may want to bring some warm drinks and food. Many teams were very creative in keeping food warm last year. Remember, there is no electricity to the tents. There will be a concession stand available for drinks and chips. DRESS IN LAYERS Be comfortable and dress for the weather. It may be warmer during the day than the evening, so dress in layers. The Velodrome can be windy, so you may want gloves and a hat for the evening. And don't forget your helmet! DONATIONS Feel free to bring any last minute donations to the Velodrome on Saturday for your team. CASH There will be a concession stand open with soft drinks and chips, which is cash only. Also, there will be henna tattoos for sale at the event. If you do not have a helmet, you can rent one for $1. There is no charge for admission. For spectators that may come and watch in the stands, there is no admission charge, but a donation would be appreciated! ENTERTAINMENT There will be music provided by a wonderful local DJ and plenty of Zumba to dance! Also, this year we have added a corn hole tournament! LET'S ALL GET OUT THERE AND PEDAL FOR PEACE! The Green Piece Indy blog recently took a look at opportunities to track down environmentally friendly bicycles, supplies, and equipment -- and also ways to recycle old ones. Part of their post reminds us how Pedal for Peace 2010 Silver Sponsor Bicycle Garage Indy can help us make the world a cleaner place: ============= RE: Cycling Whether you’re a Lance Armstrong wannabe or simply wheel around the neighborhood on your vintage Schwinn, chances are good that you’ve had to replace a few bike tubes (the inner part of the tire that keeps it inflated) along the way. Rather than tossing out the busted tubes, take them to the recycling bin at Bicycle Garage Indy. (Both the northside and southside locations participate in the program.) The stores also have recycling bins for Clif Bar wrappers, thanks to the company’s partnership with Terracycle. ============= [The post continues here.] While you're training for this year's Pedal For Peace event, remember to be mindful of the environment and stop by BGI with your old tubes and Clif Bar wrappers. | archivesOctober 2010 categories | ||||||
