2010 pedal for peace supported
AWAKEN and the Central Asia Institute

Pedal for Peace raised $60,000 in our 2nd year. The proceeds benefited Central Asia Institute (Greg Mortenson) and AWAKEN (Bibi Bahrami, Muncie In.) These two organizations strive to build and maintain schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan which focuses on educating women and girls.

Bibi Bahrami, who resides in Muncie, Indiana, founded her own non-profit and Afghan NGO that has built a school, medical facility, and women’s literacy program in the village in which she was born, Behsood, Afghanistan. Currently, 800 children attend the school from several remote villages.

Central Asia Institute

Greg Mortenson is a visionary whose approach to promoting peace has struck a powerful chord globally.  His story is found in his two New York Times bestselling books.  His organization, Central Asia Institute, has built 130 schools in remote villages of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan in the last 16 years.  Their major target is the education of girls.

Mortenson has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize and has received one of the highest civil honors awarded by the government of Pakistan.  Branches of the military now use him as a teacher and consultant, and the Pentagon has adopted Three Cups of Teas required reading for all officers enrolled in counterinsurgency courses.
